When you think of “sinners” who might be excluded from God’s kingdom, does anyone come to mind? If so, you may be entering dangerous territory. The Pharisees were certain of their own seat at God’s table, convinced that the tax collectors and prostitutes had no such place. But Jesus came precisely for the people the religious crowd wrote off. He welcomes the broken, the fallen, the forgotten with open arms the moment they repent and turn to Him. God’s grace reaches farther than our judgments, and we may be surprised by those who are on heaven’s guest list!

Ask a hundred people to tell you who in this world will make it into heaven, and most of them will say, “The ones who are good, who don’t get drunk or do drugs or lie or cheat or steal, the ones who go to church, the ones who keep the Ten Commandments…” In other words, they’re saying if you perform good enough, God might let you in. But, in fact, the Bible says we can never be good enough to get into heaven. Well, that leaves us in a pretty bad spot! So what are we to do?
